It’s time for another Career Q&A and this time we interviewed Instagram star Erin Elizabeth. Erin’s career started on Instagram and has since grown into a full blown blogging business. With nearly 40k followers and countless upcoming projects, Erin was able to answer some of 24 Seven’s questions about changing careers, the interview process, and career growth.
Q: Briefly describe your background.
I am a life and style blogger from Ottawa, Canada. Blogging was always a big interest of mine, but I never really knew how to get started and I always put it off. I soon figured out that others were using tools like Twitter and Instagram to break into the blogging world and drive traffic to their websites. From there I started an Instagram account to build up a following and drive them to my blog.
Q: Is there anything someone should never say in an interview?
I think honesty is a commendable attribute in a person. In an interview, it is really important to be yourself, and important that your personality and values fit with the employer.
That being said you should still keep an interview at a professional level, keep it clean, and steer clear of things that may be inappropriate! Your skills get you the interview, but your personality and whether you’re a good fit is what gets you the job.
Q: What role has networking played in your own career growth?
Networking is huge in any career. Usually, I’m shy until you get to know me, but since I have started blogging I have stepped way out of my comfort zone, and I absolutely love that.
Blogging has pushed me to do things I would have never tried otherwise like really putting myself out there. It’s amazing all the people you meet when you do put yourself out there, and you never know which connections will lead to new ones!
Q: What advice do you have for someone who wants to change careers?
That’s a tough one. I’m the kind of person who needs to love what I do because life is way too short to just work to live. I think doubt and second-guessing yourself is what will eat you up! If you’re sure it is something you want to do, then do it and don’t look back. Always go with your instincts.
