Job description

Our outdoor client is looking for an Asst. Apparel Designer to join their team on contract over the next 4 months with potential to extend. In this role you will provide apparel design support for a designated Designer(s) and other members of the department with regard to the design, development and production.  Oversee carryover styles and styles with slight modifications to design requirements.  Participate as a team member in creating, tracking, organizing, and proofing product related information. As directed by the Apparel Design management team, and Designer(s), provide computer data and illustration skills for seasonal design projects and the PDM (product data management) process. Communicate category related product information to internal departments.  Work with team members to ensure that calendar deadlines are met to reach Company goals.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Highest-level priority spent managing the generation of technical design sketches and technical package information for all assigned designs, then managing BOM completion for all assigned designs, and managing general aspects of design development and generation.

Work closely with designated Designer(s) for assigned category(s) in creating new products and facilitate the design and development process for apparel projects including In-Line and SMU (Special Make-Up) projects.  

Collaborate with Designer to procure critical design information related to the development requirements of a style or product including; material, trim, color direction and style intent.

Specific areas of focus include: Technical flat sketches, block development, fabric and trim development, design presentation support, PDM entry, lab dips generation, prototype submission and review, bill of materials data, updates to styles for line adoption, audit reviews and sales sample review.

Act as a resource for all category specific design development related information including prototype development status, features, fabric, trim and color BOM details. 

Utilize computer design and illustration skills to create and maintain accuracy of all garment tech sketches throughout the season, including any detail sketches as needed.

Use this information to create all technical sketches needed to pictorially define construction details or design line requirements, supporting the documentation of style specifications, style measurements, and sew methods.

Support the prototype submission process as needed by communicating with Design, Materials Research, Liaison Offices, Product Development, Graphics, Sourcing and Production.

Maintain responsibility for all assigned style related data input into PDM (Product Data Management) throughout the season. Complete BOM (Bill of Materials) as directed by designer and update accordingly.

As directed by the Designer, contribute and become familiar with all design details on a style by style basis.  Communicate critical product fit requirements, details of construction, colors and fabrication information for each prototype in development. 

In some categories, Assist with the creation and coloring of CAD yarn dyes.  Build and maintain yarn dye artwork colorways and strike off approval related data in PDM throughout the season.

Attend fit sessions to review factory prototypes.  Sit in fit sessions for assigned category to make necessary notations for sketch updates as a result of fit sessions.  Execute necessary follow-up on prototype revisions. This includes updating tech sketches or detail sketches as needed as directed by the Designer and Product Developer.

 Create and organize Design notebooks on a style by style basis with current spec and prototype information including tech sketch(s), BOM/color spec, measurements, materials and all pertinent sample request information.

Work with Category Production Artists on providing up to date sketches and style information for Computer Aided Design color-ups for CAD Books. Keep computer files organized and updated for access by team members.

Review salesman samples and note any problems/corrections that may be needed for production. Assist in proofing Seasonal Catalogue for correct sketches and color information.

Participate in team meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as needed to assure strong communication on all process and product related issues.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS

Mentor less experienced or new Assistant Designers and Interns.

Assist with building and maintaining design presentation boards and materials for internal design led meetings. 

General administrative support for assigned designer including color printing, filing, copy machine, etc.

REQUIRED SKILLS & Experience

  • Six months to three years of experience in apparel design or related field, or equivalent work experience in the garment industry
  • Possess excellent organizational skills. 
  • Possess broad knowledge apparel product development and thorough knowledge of general design process from concept to pre-production.
  • Possess basics of garment construction and specifications.
  • Possess excellent color perception. 
  • Must have excellent computer skills for Macintosh and PC formats and be familiar with the Adobe Illustrator program.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills team player. 
  • Attention to detail; repetitive work; ability to follow specific directions. 
  • Must have mental capability to troubleshoot and solve problems of a moderate complexity.
  • Some pressure may exist when facing deadlines.
  • Prefer working knowledge of material sourcing techniques (fabric, trim etc.).
  • Must have excellent eyesight free from any color impairment.
