Job description

Our client in the sports goods consumer products industry is seeking a Cost Accountant. This person would report into the Controller. This role will perform accounting and analysis for the purchasing, inventory, disbursements and cost of goods accounting cycle for a sporting goods consumer products business with global product sourcing.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Calculate and maintain standard costs for overhead cost components (freight and duties). Also verify that factory costs and subcomponent costs are accurate.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of inventory subledger to general ledger and research/adjust for variances.
  • Prepare all journal entries and account reconciliations for all balance sheet and P&L accounts impacted by the inventory/COGS cycle including inventory, capitalized cost variances, accounts payable, accrued expenses, direct COGS, indirect COGS variances and royalty expense.
  • Manage all reserves for excess, discontinued and obsolete inventory.
  • Validate and record results of periodic inventory cycle counts and/or annual physical inventory count.
  • Work closely with the product development and supply chain teams to ensure that all new inventory items are subjected to cost/price/margin analysis.
  • Develop and maintain pricing analysis model (derived from cost analysis).
  • Oversee the preparation of all quarterly royalty reports and remittances. Work closely with business development team to ensure that all new license agreements are accounted for properly. Maintain accounting for royalty accruals and prepaid minimum guarantees.
  • Calculate and file all duty drawback claims.
  • Assist outside legal counsel in all duty protest claims.
  • Analyze margins at month end paying particular attention to variances due to cost changes, product mix shifts and customer mix.
  • Assist in preparation of annual budget and semiannual reforecast.
  • Develop better reporting tools in ERP and Business Intelligence systems to analyze gross margins by product, customer, region, sales representative, etc.
  • Familiarity with Great Plains ERP system is a plus.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Preferred major in Accounting, Finance or related business degree)
  • 5-10 years accounting experience. Consumer product or retail industry experience is preferred
