Job description
Our client is a new broadcast network looking to hire a full-time Sr. Visual Journalist (Editor) to lead our graphics and data team. In this tole you should have experience reporting, working with data visualization and telling stories creatively, whether that’s through dataviz, interactive features, webGL, or similar. This is a position where you will be expected to pitch and develop your own stories as well as collaborate with others to create high impact visual and data-driven journalism.Location: Remote (hybrid option if you live in NY)
Salary $90-156k (DOE)
Responsibilities
Anticipate and prepare for breaking-news coverage needs for a wide variety of scenarios
Assign and edit graphics and visuals, including charts, maps, interactives or other visual storytelling formats for breaking news stories and medium to long-term features
Identify strong visual opportunities for data and graphics stories and features across other desks
Review data, analyses, news graphics, data visualizations and interactive storytelling to ensure they uphold rigorous standards
Edit data stories, including graphics and text
Work closely with other desks to anticipate and create updating, live data graphics and maps for things like severe weather, earthquakes, wildfires, and more
Qualifications & Experience
7+ years experience, ideally in a newsroom or similar environment
A reader-first perspective and strong commitment to multiplatform storytelling
Lots of ideas about what would make our work more impactful, serve our audiences better, and how we can work more effectively
You’re comfortable working collaboratively, individually and with cross-functional teams
Familiarity with the command line and Git
Experience working with some combination of modern data and visualization tools, such as Illustrator, ai2html, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and related libraries (especially D3), R, Python, SQL, Excel, etc.
Some familiarity with modern mapping tools (Arc, QGIS, MapBox, Maps4News, etc.)
