The start of a new year is often accompanied by a vision for a fresh, new you. We want to help you make this year your best yet, by creating and then accomplishing goals, whether you are focused on landing your dream job, creating a healthier lifestyle, or encompassing overall mindfulness. We’re helping you start the perfect deep dive into setting actionable and manageable goals for this year.

Be SMART

SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely – help set guidelines to create and accomplish your goals. These are all important aspects of goal setting and should be taken into consideration when creating your goal list, but to get started, be sure you can answer these three questions for each goal:

  • Can you measure your progress? How?

  • Can this goal be achieved?

  • Do you have a timeline in place?

Once you can answer these questions, you will be able to ensure your goals are actionable and manageable. The best part about setting goals is accomplishing them, so make sure they are attainable.  We know sometimes there may be a goal on your list that seems a little farfetched and we are in no way telling you not to go for this too (you should!), but to make the task less daunting, try setting smaller goals that will help you get to the really big one.

Take a look back

Yes, last year is done and in the past, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take both the positive and the negative experiences and learn from them. Review last year’s goals and accomplishments and see where you were successful, where there’s room to grow, and what you should revisit to continue pushing forward in the new year. Each year teaches us something, so be sure to take those lessons and apply them as you plan ahead.

Write it down and win

We’re sure you’ve heard this before, but writing things down is important. When you write things down, not only are you more likely to remember them, but it also helps you keep yourself accountable. Put post-its around your home, on your bathroom mirror, on your desk, or anywhere else you frequent. Tried this approach and it didn’t work? Go one step further. Get digital and take a picture of your goals and set them as your phone background, set reminders asking if you took a step toward your goal that day, or get creative and create a vision board.
