As digital and technology trends have enabled us to share information across new platforms and in new ways, we are becoming an increasingly visual society. Remember show and tell? Today, it is extremely beneficial to not only tell people your skills when applying for a job but to show them at the same time. We know that creating the perfect portfolio is important to your job search, so we enlisted the help of our expert recruiters and asked our them for their top tips and advice on what makes a good portfolio.
Once upon a time
Just as you want your resume to flow in a way that makes sense, your portfolio should also tell a story. Clients want to see your thought process and the ideas behind your designs. Your portfolio should include mood boards, color stories, silhouette and print ideas, hand and/or illustrator sketches and if you have the final product shots to include that is a bonus. One of the most asked questions we get about portfolios is if it should be print or digital? We see mostly digital portfolios on a daily basis, but it is also extremely common to have blended portfolios that are both print and digital. Whichever you feel more comfortable with is great! But make sure you do it well.
As you are putting together a mix of your professional work, you may also want to include an updated project to show your personal taste and aesthetic. Trends are constantly changing, so this allows you to add a personal touch while also showing that you are staying relevant. As an added bonus, this will help keep you responsible for keeping your professional as up to date as possible. If you are working on your portfolio as you work with different clients or on personal projects, you won’t find yourself going back in time to dig up work. This will also make updating your portfolio a less daunting task!
It is important for your portfolio to be clean while standing out. Make sure it is concise and properly displays your skillset portfolio. Once this is achieved, try and find creative ways to differentiate yourself – after all, it is a competitive market we are in!
