Job description

Technical Designer (Ready-to-Wear & Cover-Ups) – Full-Time

Company Overview

Our client is a fast-growing swimwear company specializing in women’s and girl’s swimwear and resort-inspired cover-ups. We are committed to delivering thoughtfully designed, high-quality garments that combine effortless style with exceptional fit. Our culture is collaborative, design-driven, and highly entrepreneurial—we move quickly, value ideas from every level, and expect our teams to take ownership from concept through delivery.

We partner with a mix of domestic and international factories and prioritize long-term vendor relationships, innovation in fit and construction, and a customer-first mindset. As we expand our product range and distribution, we’re looking for a Technical Designer who can help elevate our standards for quality, consistency, and execution across all categories, including Plus Size.

Position Overview

As a Technical Designer for Ready-to-Wear and Cover-Ups, you will bridge the gap between design, product development, and production. You will translate design concepts into production-ready garments, ensuring fit, construction, and quality meet both brand and customer expectations. This role requires a deep understanding of apparel construction, a strong sense of proportion and fit, and the ability to collaborate closely with cross-functional partners and overseas vendors.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Development

  • Create, update, and maintain comprehensive tech packs from development through production, including:
    • Detailed construction sketches and callouts
    • Bill of materials (BOM), trims, and label specs
    • Measurement specs, grading rules, and tolerances
  • Translate design intent and aesthetic details into clear, manufacturable specifications.
  • Own the technical development lifecycle for assigned styles, ensuring all technical documentation is accurate, current, and aligned across systems.

Fit & Construction

  • Lead and conduct fit sessions on live models or mannequins for Regular and Plus Size Ready-to-Wear and cover-ups.
  • Evaluate garments for fit, balance, drape, and construction, providing clear direction for pattern and construction improvements.
  • Partner with overseas factories to achieve consistent fit standards while honoring design intent and margin targets.
  • Document and distribute precise fit comments, track all pattern and spec changes, and manage style iterations through final approval.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure garments meet In Private, Inc.’s standards for quality, longevity, and performance across sizes and fabrications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues, including:
    • Pattern and grading inconsistencies
    • Construction issues impacting fit or durability
    • Fabric and trim compatibility concerns
  • Provide factories with precise, solution-oriented feedback and construction alternatives to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Support internal QA processes and partner with Production to mitigate risk on high-volume or complex styles.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Design to interpret sketches and mood boards into feasible technical solutions while preserving the intended aesthetic.
  • Work with Product Development and Production to ensure styles meet cost, lead-time, and vendor capabilities.
  • Communicate daily with cross-functional teams to align on fit priorities, testing timelines, and production milestones.
  • Participate in line reviews, sample reviews, and pre-production meetings, offering technical insight and recommendations.

Skills & Qualifications
Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Design, Pattern Making, Fashion Design, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in technical design for Ready-to-Wear (contemporary or mass market); experience with cover-ups, resortwear, or swim-adjacent categories a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience fitting Plus Size Ready-to-Wear garments.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong understanding of garment construction, patternmaking, grading, and fit across size ranges.
  • Proficiency with pattern software such as Gerber, Optitex, or Clo3D.
  • Advanced Adobe Illustrator skills for technical flats and callouts.
  • Experience working in PLM platforms (e.g., Flex PLM, Bamboo Rose, or similar).
  • Strong Microsoft 365 skills; Excel proficiency is required (including using formulas, measurement tables, and data tracking).

Core Competencies

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in specs, comments, and documentation.
  • Analytical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal partners and overseas vendors.
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize and manage multiple styles, seasons, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment and adapting to shifting priorities.

What We Offer

  • Full-time position with competitive compensation.
  • Benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance (details to be confirmed by company).
  • Opportunity to influence fit and construction standards for a growing brand.
  • Collaborative environment with direct exposure to Design, Product Development, and Production leadership.
