AI has changed how people search for and apply for jobs. More and more marketing, creative, and technology candidates are using AI to write their resumes and apply for jobs at a much higher volume. And employers are having far more difficulty identifying the candidates who are a strong fit.
That makes standing out less about how many roles you apply for and more about how clearly you target your message and show employers exactly what you bring to each opportunity.
AI can turn what used to be a time-consuming application process into a much faster one. A candidate can use AI to adapt a resume to a job description, draft a cover letter, and move on to the next application in minutes.
When thousands of candidates have access to the same tools, however, application volume obviously increases for employers. And more applications mean more competition for each opening and more resumes that use similar language, keywords, and formats.
The result is a job market where applying to more roles doesn’t necessarily improve your chances. If dozens (or hundreds) of candidates are using AI to submit similar applications, setting yourself apart becomes imperative.
AI can make a resume sound polished without making it more useful. Generic phrases like “results-driven professional” or “strategic thinker” don’t tell a hiring manager much about what you actually bring to the table. Specifics do. What did you build? What was your strategy? What tools did you use? How did you solve the problem? What changed because of your work?
Your resume should make those answers easy to find.
Before tailoring your resume to individual openings, craft a strong core version that clearly presents your skills, experience, and achievement. It should stand on its own as a compelling account of what you bring to an employer and give you a reliable starting point for each application.
Then adapt that resume to the role you’re pursuing. Use the job posting’s required and preferred qualifications to guide which skills and accomplishments you emphasize, drawing on the employer’s language where it accurately describes your experience. Include both technical abilities and interpersonal strengths. Alongside your expertise in analytics or design software, for example, show how you’ve collaborated with colleagues, communicated ideas, or led a team. Support those strengths with examples rather than simply listing them.
The same attention to detail applies to cover letters and application responses. If AI writes everything for you, your materials will lose the details and personality that distinguish you from other candidates with similar experience.
Employers increasingly want candidates who can explain how they apply their skills, solve problems, and use AI in practical ways.
AI can be useful during almost every stage of the job search. The key is deciding what you want it to do.
Consider using it to:
Then review the output yourself. Replace bland AI filler language with specific examples. Add the results, tools, projects, and decisions that reflect your actual experience. If a sentence doesn’t sound like something you would say in an interview, rewrite it.
You don’t need to avoid AI. You need to make sure your application still reflects what you know and what you’ve done.
When facing great competition, working with a recruiter can give you an edge.
24 Seven recruiters get to know your experience, skills, career goals, and preferences, then connect you with opportunities that align with your priorities. They can also provide context on what employers are looking for and help you position your experience for a specific role.
Finding the right recruiter can also make your job search more focused. Instead of spending your time applying to every role that looks remotely relevant, you can work with an expert who understands your background and can help you decide where to concentrate your efforts.
Standing out right now doesn’t mean out-automating everyone else. It means giving hiring managers something AI can’t replicate: a clear and human-sounding account of the real experience, judgment, and skills you’d bring to the role.
