Top Fashion Talent Competing in Supima, New York, and Paris Fashion Week

In 2008, Supima, the marketing brand for American-grown Pima cotton, began a competition featuring graduating seniors from select universities. This competition is now a much-anticipated design show, introducing the next generation of designers and has evolved into an international showcase of their work. At 24 Seven, we're proud to have over 20 years of experience as one of the top creative staffing agencies in the fashion industry, so we're always impressed by this competition – and this year, we wanted to participate. We partnered with Supima in this incredible design competition to help the contestants market their talents and portfolios to some of the most prestigious fashion recruiters in the world.

Meet the finalists

For the competition, each of the top U.S. design schools select one graduating senior to represent them. Past finalists have come from universities including Academy of Arts University, FIDM, FIT, Kent State University, Parsons School of Design, Pratt BF+DA, Rhode Island School of Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design, and they work with mentors provided by the universities. Finalists work with mentors provided by the universities, as well as Bibhu Mohapatra, a CFDA Award-winning designer, who has participated as a mentor for the past 3 competitions. Mentors allow students to learn about various elements on the runway, what will resonate with the judges, and valuable information that will set them up for a successful design career.

How the contest works

The contest is judged by a panel of expert professionals from the fashion and media world, who all work collectively to select the winner. Judges are announced prior to the show, but previous panels included judges from W Magazine, Elle Magazine, The Daily Front Row, Allure, and notable designers. Judges for the 2018 competition will be announced prior to the show. Participants are judged on their presentation of the five looks they created for each type of Supima fabric: shirting, knit, velveteen, twill, and denim. Finalists must design one evening wear look for each fabric, creating a five-look capsule collection, preparing them to launch their career as Designers and allow them to get hands-on experience to combine with their portfolios.
